Roof Cupolas

Looking for a way to maximize the functionality of your roof and add unique character to it? A roof cupola is the perfect solution! Traditionally used as lookout towers (a long, long time ago) and then for ventilation purposes, cupolas are gaining popularity among homeowners for their roofing needs. They are not only good at increasing the functionality of your roof, but they can also be used solely for decorative purposes!

If you want to add a cupola to your roof – or install a new roof with a cupola – in the Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia area, Shanco Companies can help. And keep in mind that cupolas can also be used on gazebos, sheds, barns and other structures as well.

About Roof Cupolas

Typically, roof cupolas have a solid wood base that can be cut to match your roofline, with an upper half that has a slatted area – some are square, some hexagonal or octagonal and others are rounded at the top. House, shed and barn cupolas are sometimes topped with a weathervane or finial. Finials are spear-like structures (think of the top of the Empire State Building) while weathervanes are more customizable and can be anything from arrows, banners and boats to animals and religious symbols (you have probably seen a cross on top of a church’s roof cupola).

Still on the fence about adding a cupola to your roof? Cupolas offer a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Functionality – a roof cupola acts as a great ventilation system, helps you save money and protects your roof from severe weather, making it more durable
  • Value – the addition of a roof cupola can increase your home’s value
  • Low-maintenance and durable qualities – a roof cupola doesn’t need to be painted and it is built to last; copper cupolas are particularly durable
  • Uniqueness – a roof cupola adds distinct architecture to your home

Functional & Beautiful Roof Cupolas

Your roof cupola acts as a ventilation system, which is particularly useful in the summer. When the sun is beating down on your roof, the attic (and second floor of your home) can get very hot. A roof cupola, however, can provide more air circulation and allows moist, hot air to escape outside. This:

  • Makes your home cooler and much more comfortable
  • Allows your AC to operate more efficiently
  • Helps prevent mildew growth, rotting wood and peeling paint in your attic

A cupola not only looks great but helps lowers your cooling costs and reduces moisture buildup during the winter. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Not only will a roof cupola increase the value of your home and help prevent issues that can cost you money (rotting wood, peeling paint, etc), but it adds distinctive character and beauty to your home as well.

Roof cupolas are available in many different shapes and materials (from wood to vinyl to copper!) If you want a cupola that is even more unique, consider a custom cupola!
