How to Tell if Your Roof Has Storm Damage

Common signs of roof damage include:

  • Missing shingles
  • Bruises or dented roofing material
  • Cracked or broken tiles, shingles, or slate
  • Leaks in the roof or ceiling
  • Dents on gutters, trim, and vents
  • Scratches and small holes on your shingles or roofing material
  • Lots of debris from tree branches that have fallen
  • Missing bricks from your chimney

If your roof has asphalt shingles, one way to tell if it has storm damage is to look for black spots or bruises. Asphalt shingles are covered in little granules that protect the roof from UV-rays from the sun. These granules can be scraped off by hail or blowing debris and leave behind a black spot. Another sign is a buildup of these granules in your gutters or downspouts.

Other signs include holes where shingles have been knocked away, cracked or torn shingles, and missing shingles. Don’t ignore these seemingly small problems—they can lead to mold and water damage to your roof. Collapsing roofs and leaking roofs can be a result of shingles that haven’t been repaired because the wood underneath then begins to rot.
